In these new works I have aimed to create an ethereal, dreamlike quality. This kind of atmosphere and feeling has always been central to my work and here the use of minimal colour allows me to achieve this.
As a kid on family holidays I always enjoyed looking at lights in the distance; especially across the sea. And for the first time they are now appearing in my work!
With my paintings, there is always a narrative focus in the foreground with the background mostly abstract. This enables the figures to stand out more powerfully, although ultimately it’s the overall atmosphere of the picture that counts for me!

I wanted to capture the unconditional love of a parent and child but paint it to remind me of my own childhood. The warmth between the two characters is real. The intimacy of the pose shows that this is a special moment and at some point childhood leaves us and the comfort toy is discarded, but the memory of this special bond remains.

I love to see my work represented in three dimensional form. ‘Before The Storm’ is inspired by one of my previous paintings ’Disappearing World,’ as I knew it would make a fascinating sculpture. One of the dominant themes within my work is the journey of life and its many uncertainties, such as where our destinies may lie. Whenever possible I try to offer hope and optimism in my paintings, and in ‘The Road To Happiness’ this is depicted in the love between the characters and through the warmth of the sky itself.

Both of my new paintings are set in London just as dusk falls. There is a small window of time in the day when there is still plenty of natural light yet street lights, car headlights and shops windows are also turned on. At this time of the day I think the atmosphere in the city changes; a twilight engulfs the city and there is an apprehension of the un-known evening in the air.
I aimed to create a feeling of warmth in both of these paintings by increasing the number of lights in the image; and developing the use of bright colours. When I begin painting I do not know the end result; however I feel this freedom only adds atmosphere and a vibrant conclusion.
I love painting these women amongst a city scene and hope that they add intrigue into the painting for the viewer - is she waiting, shopping, on her way to a rendezvous or something else?

Ever since childhood the fairground has held an allure for me; not only the rides, but the lively atmosphere and sheer energy of the place. At night the gaudiness is transformed into something quite magical.
I wanted to capture the glow of the lights in the wet sand. This was a new subject for me, and I can’t wait to try it again.

The seaside pier is timeless; the sounds, lights and smells transport you to another place. I love being able to reflect the distant lights into the shining wet sand, so that the painting comes to life. I really had fun painting ‘Dreamlands.’

In this new collection of limited edition prints I aimed to focus on the importance of the human element and have considered our relationship with the countryside.
For many I believe the countryside gives us the vital balance in our lives; whether it be a walk alone enabling us to put our thoughts into some kind of order; or a place to take family and friends to enjoy some fresh air.
I have found adding a stronger emphasis on the human element in my paintings an exciting and enjoyable new challenge.
