News : Lad to Laird

Lad to Laird - Alexander Millar

Alexander Millar – Lad to Laird

One of Scotland’s most historic stately homes is about to be overrun by a gang of Gadgies.

Artist Alexander Millar – whose Gadgies series of sketches and paintings tops the best seller lists – is mounting a major exhibition at 18th century Hopetoun House on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

Alexander Millar (Photography by Anthony Dorman)
The Lad to Laird exhibition on Sunday, October 2, will feature an extensive collection of Millar’s sought after work and will be his only Scottish appearance this year.

Organised by contemporary gallery breeze, the event is expected to attract up to 500 collectors and investors who value Millar’s Gadgie characters, which have increased in value by an average of 20% each year.

The Kilmarnock-born artist is busy creating two special limited editions for the Hopetoun House event which will feature art to suit every budget, form £200 limited edition prints to £30,000 original oils available to purchase

Millar said his inspiration for the Gadgie characters springs from his childhood in the west of Scotland and early memories of time spent with “old men dressed in dark suits smoking Woodbines and large missile-shaped women, decked out in overcoats, pinnies and tartan headscarves”.

Alexander Millar said: “This appearance at Hopetoun House will be a long overdue return “hame” and I’m looking forward to seeing collectors of my work old and new.

“I’ve been able to refresh my art over the last few months preparing for my homecoming and have produced lots of new paintings that reflect the love I have for Scotland.
Hold On - Alexander Millar Original

“I enjoy so much listening to what people see in my work, and how they always mirror back to me an image that is solely wrapped up in their own lives, whichever town or city they come from.

“As for me, I always see in them my own childhood, living in a rough, small mining village in Ayrshire. It is and will always be “hame” for me and I hope everyone that gets the chance to see my new work can be wrapped up in their own favourite memories of times past.”

Event organiser and breeze art gallery owner Bob Corsie, said: “Alex’s Gadgie paintings are highly collectable and have introduced a whole generation to the delights of building up an art portfolio.

“From Lad to Laird is a premier event which showcases one of Scotland’s most successful artists and the juxtaposition of placing Alex’s Gadgies and their working class roots, in the splendour of Hopetoun House, adds sparkle to what is his only Scottish appearance in 2011.

“Like all our events and the artists we promote, this is art for all and even in these economically difficult times, there will be sketches and paintings which provide access to art regardless of budget.”

A live painting demonstration by Millar and signing session for buyers will be completed with a charity silent auction, a guest appearance by the real Gadgie and his wife, and a traditional Scottish afternoon tea for invited guests.

The full afternoon will feature originals and exclusive limited edition prints for this event only as well as the opportunity to have your photo taken with Alexander Millar. From the artist:

“The piece is a celebration of the fantastic achievements of all those connected with the Homeless World Cup. It has three figures; the first one depicts the dejection of the homeless man, but the second and third figures show him literally pulling himself up and then leaping and punching the air, football style.

I’m a great fan of the game having raised two sons who are both mad keen players and supporters. But I’ve also witnessed the magic potential football has (and I’d personally argue that it has it more than any other sport) to build self esteem in young men through the utter joy of the game.

I know there are down sides to the game, but this is a celebration of the up side, and all the good it does right from grassroots to the Premiership!

The piece itself is made from ceramic and glass and measures 60 cm high x 40cm x 60cm. One of the glass pieces is shattered and the figure leaping in celebration comes through the glass. People will interpret the smashed glass in their own way I’ sure, but for me it gives a sense of action, immediacy and release of energy.I also wanted it to give a slightly edgy feel to the piece (no pun intended!) Broken glass is often around when bad things have happened, but there is also the sense that this man is breaking away from the bad things in his life.”

Craig Davison

I was born in 1965 in Sheffield and have enjoyed drawing for as long as I can remember. Art was my favourite subject at school, but once I left I took it no further. In the late 80’s I managed to get a job as a cartoonist, working on pre-school comics. I drew comic strips of a variety of characters including The Shoe People, The Wombles, Huxley Pig and Bangers and Mash.

Drawing every day improved my skills and after a few years I moved on to work at a computer games company as an animator and games designer. During this period I worked on a wide portfolio of games, including Zorro, The Hulk and The Hurricanes, as well as the game concept and characters for Johnny Bazookatone.

It was there I began sculpting reference figures for 3D animation, which I loved. This ultimately led to becoming a freelance sculptor, sculpting dragons to teddies, animals to action figures for ranges such as Me To You, Enchantica, Harry Potter and Doctor Who.

Years passed and sculpting work was getting harder to come by. But something else was around the corner: in late 2007 I noticed a contest in which Washington Green hoped to find Alexander Millar an apprentice. I had always wanted to try my hand at painting, but had never got around to it; here was my opportunity. I quickly painted and entered a picture, and, to my surprise, I finished in the last three! That was it, the life of an artist beckoned.

I began to paint seriously from that point and local galleries started to sell my work. Now I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Shazia

I was a moderately quiet child growing up in Keighley, Yorkshire. I say moderately only because I grew up in a family full of girls and feathers often ruffled, especially in cases of critical importance, namely clothes and records! My mother was an excellent seamstress and I loved watching her painstakingly measure, cut, pin and sew pieces of fabric which evolved into the most exquisite dresses. I would often sit under her sewing table watching her foot press down on the pedal of her sewing machine and listen attentively to her stories. My mum, originally from Pakistan, often told stories to keep us quite when she needed to work. Her storytelling carried me to a benign world full of hope and love but often with a foreboding and creeping sadness that lay untold.

I knew from an early age I had the ability to draw. But it was the ability to remember and learn by heart details that, when combined, became the future benchmark of the work I now produce. The stories told and retold as a child helped, in part, to create a palpable and lucid world deciphered only through the use of drawing.

At school I was very lucky to be taught by great art teachers. In fact, throughout my schooling my teachers have been very important. Their grounding, nurturing and kind devotion helped provide the push and inspiration to further my potential. I studied for a foundation course in art and design followed by a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design at Leeds Metropolitan University, specialising in illustration. After my three years I left the UK to ‘backpack’ around Latin America and Africa.

Travelling played a pivotal role in my creative work. Certainly giving me the freedom to develop my own ideas and in my own time. I returned to the basic art of drawing using only pen and paper; a process in which the virtues of simplicity unravel the sentiments. This has produced, in my opinion, my most honest and frank sketches to date. Even now when I look back at my sketch books they instantly take me back to my travels.

On returning to the UK I worked as a studio designer, serving a high profile company. As an artist, it was a certainly a complete contrast from the heady days of travelling and challenging at the best of times. To reign in on this fast-moving and often high-paced working atmosphere, I ditched the studio and took on freelance work for the next five years before starting a family and embarking on a career as a full time artist.

I still live in Keighley, Yorkshire and I am married with two young boys.

News : Live Painting in our Jenners gallery

To coincide with the Edinburgh Festival breeze are delighted to announce that three artists will be painting live during the month of August.

Live Painting Schedule

Philip RaskinPhilip Raskin

Sunday 21st August

Philip studied at the Glasgow School of Art. Over time he has developed a painterly impasto style; using the texture of the paint and the shape of the brushwork, he gives each of his luminous landscapes its own reality, rather than allowing it to be a smooth window onto a world beyond.

“I tend to paint very private places for the viewer to own and enjoy; no people, no houses, no telegraph poles -just the driftwood of an ebb tide, mist tumbling on a distant hilltop and silence broken only by lapping water and gulls ascending.”

Geoff Marston

Geoff Marston

Saturday 27th August & Sunday 28th August

Geoff attended art college in the early sixties and went on to lecture and teach art for over 30 years. Throughout that time he continued creating and exhibiting his artwork through mixed shows and one man exhibitions. His lifelong passion of Blues music has inspired much of his wonderful collection that includes box canvas’ and unique cases.

“What I find particularly fascinating about the Blues from a visual standpoint is the large number of contrasting characters that the music has within it.”
