Bernie Wisniewski

Bernie Wisniewski located in the north east, is a painter of vibrant, colourful and bold images. Originally from Scotland his paintings can be akin to the Scottish colourists, whilst other descriptions of expressionist, impressionist and fauve fit.

With no formail training his paintings are from the soul rather than a textbook giving his paintings a loose and fresh feel to them.

His inspiration comes from the local North East and Scotland, with many paintings of landscapes, cityscapes and still life.

Artwork comes in the form of acrylic on canvas in an original form, with high quality limited edition giclee prints available.

Matthew James

I have always wanted to be an artist ever since I can remember, producing sketches and paintings from a young age all the way through education to university. I quickly singled out the medium of oil paints to produce work in as I was drawn to the vivid, strong colours only oils really can express. Now, I feel I’ve developed ideas that I am very happy with and excited to show.

I tend to enjoy using contrasting colours in my work though in ways that compliment one another to give a dynamic to each finished piece. A focus of loose painting alongside tight detail also gives the work that extra dimension I enjoy capturing.

I’m keen to develop further ideas around my current theme of ocean scenes and look forward to great developments for collectors to enjoy.

Breeze are delighted to announce the arrival of this new original from Alexander Millar.

‘Hold On’ is a wonderful original oil painting from Alexander Millar. Alex’s work is instantly recognisable and his ‘gadgie’ character symbolises all that is great about the people of the North East. Alex is a self taught artist taking inspiration from the north east of England and today he is one of the country’s most popular fine artists.

News : Mandy’s Long Range Effort Scores Winner For Scotland’s Homeless World Cup Team

An international sculptor is hoping to hit the back of the net when she auctions one of her pieces in honour of Scotland’s Homeless World Cup winning team.

Homeless World CupMandy Long has donated a sculpture which will be subject of a silent auction at Jenners department store in Edinburgh on Saturday. (Sept 17)

A long term supporter of the Homeless World Cup charity, Long’s ceramic and glass work has three figures with the first depicting the dejection of a homeless man, but the second and third showing him pulling himself up and then leaping and punching the air football style

The silent auction takes place during a weekend exhibition of Long’s sought-after sculptures at the breeze art gallery on the 2nd floor of Jenners’ Princes Street store, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Long said: “The piece is a celebration of the fantastic achievements of all those connected with the Homeless World Cup. I’m a great fan of the game, having raised two sons who are both mad keen players and supporters. But I’ve also witnessed the magic potential football to build self esteem in young men through the utter joy of the game.”

The piece itself is made from ceramic and glass and measures 60cm high x 40cm x 60cm. One of the glass pieces is shattered and the figure leaping in celebration comes through the glass.

Homeless World Cup

“People will interpret the smashed glass in their own way I’m sure, but for me it gives a sense of action, immediacy and release of energy. Broken glass is often around when bad things have happened, but there is also the sense that this man is breaking away from the bad things in his life.”

Scotland are the newly crowned Homeless World Cup champions following a 4-3 victory against Mexico in Paris last month in a tournament which attracted 60 national sides.

Bob Corsie, breeze gallery owner, said: “Mandy’s work is always inspiring, exciting and challenging and she has a strong relationship with football and the Homeless World Cup movement. We are delighted to welcome her work to Edinburgh and appreciate her generosity in auctioning a piece to support this fine charity.”

Mandy Long will be available at the breeze gallery on Saturday and Sunday (Sept 17 and 18) to meet visitors and to discuss her work.

z Artist Information

Zinsky’s remarkable portraits capture the essence of his subject in a way that sets his work apart from that of his contemporaries. In a world where the art of the icon is in such great demand, he brings something new and exciting to this hugely popular genre. The confidence and skill he demonstrates within his compositions combines with the speed and spontaneity with which he works, demonstrating a raw talent that is completely natural.
A reclusive artist, Zinsky was born and brought up in the UK but now lives in Barcelona. Spending time in a city famour for its architecture, art and culture has had a profound impact on his work, and he has absorbed influences and ideas from his surroundings. A definite non-conformist, it is the art of the streets and the bohemian fringes that he admires rather than the more officially sanctioned establishment work, yet ironically the brilliance of his own oil paintings would make them look at home in the most formal of public galleries.
The staggeringly detailed portrayals of his celebrity subjects has won his a dedicated following and their launch into the UK has already made a massive impact.

Description

A whole bunch of beautiful David Bailley photographs collaged together in sepias and water. I imagined some of them lying on his London studio floor in the mid 60s, some over developed, some washed out and ruined. Fragments from another time peeking through into our century. I think these guys came together magically, probably by design, to enrichen and advance our cause. I know this is up for debate, but that’s why we are here.
I was staying in a beautiful, half-finished villa over-looking Corfu Town this summer. From the veranda we enjoyed the owls a-hooting, cycadas chirping and the nectar Mythos as we watched shooting stars hurtle the universe. I put on a Beatles list on my I-Pod and within moments my well-fuelled friends were ripping out perfect harmonies at the top of their voices. We were like kids again, all travails washed away. As one said, “I’d forgotten how good they were… I’d forgotten how many there were.”

Lately I’ve been experimenting with stop-out fluid and my scratch nib. These horizontal lines are applied with them, then washes of watercolour. The result appears a bit etherial to me, like an old John Logie Baird television showing life in another place and time. It’s almost like I’m remembering how I first saw the Beatles. It wasn’t in 3D techniclor… it was grainy and defused. It was on “Thank Your Lucky Stars” in 1963, and from the opening bars of “Please, Please Me” I was adicted. I recall my Grandfather puffing on his full strength Capstain splurting out “they’ll never last.”

This is from an Eric Meola portrait. He had taken 700 shots of Bruce & Clarence in and around his New Jersey studio during 2 months of 1975′s the hot summer. I have cropped the shot drastically taking it into it’s essence I feel. You can see the sincerity and exuberance in his eyes, and you know his batteries are fully charged with a huge creative outpouring primed to flow.

I had to find a convincing way to illustrate leather, and found a way with acrylic paint and white pencil. When faced with a challenge like this, I can only marvel at the skills of old masters like Hans Holbein. Imagine Hans doing a huge of oil of Hendrix?!

Description

The Doors found their name in a verse by William Blake, quoted in full on this painting. The lines illustrate beautifully all I feel about their wonderful music… the mysticism, the space between life and death we all tread. “Riders on the Storm” is a metaphor for our walk on this tightrope we call life, and the half light world this painting occupies attempts to demonstrate our shadowy, unreal journey.

By all accounts Jim Morrison was a thoroughly unpleasant man, but he looked so alluringly handsome. This whole event is a wonderful mystery, and I suppose I’m guilty of giving it far too much thought. Aaaaanyway, I thank the Universe for soundtracks like this!

The Loon behind his thrashed cymbals in classic pose. Facial gymnastics and unbelievable body movements made him top box office during his brief time on our planet. Keith lived his life in the colours I’ve painted him. He used up his 3 score and 10 in a very short time by not sleeping. His life was a weekend.

Acrylics supply the intensity of colour. The sweat lashings are watery white acrylic, and without them the painting was quite static.

John’s words weave a mosaic over youthful features. Right time, right place, right!
Black permanent ink with glazes of watercolour glazes built up. Big, powerful composition infers the size of Lennon’s contribution, some would say ego. With that kind of talent I would struggle to keep Mr. Ego in his jar.

Description

One photograph from their Mad Day Out, Sunday 28th July 1968, in London has served me so well. A series of beautiful shots were taken at Thomson House (demolished in 1989) by various photographers. The studio up in the penthouse was built for Lord Snowdon, but on this occasion some of the world’s best (Don McCullin, Tom Murray, Mal Evans and Stephen Goldblatt to name a few) shot the lads in front of various backdrops, using a fan to create the illusion of a gale blowing.

I have rearranged the composition several times, and on this occasion added loosely painted autumn leaves to add to the illusion. I love those days when the rich colour of the leaves spark against the brilliant blue skies we sometimes get at that time of year.

Description

A composition using Venetian Blinds to add interest. It’s a tribute to Brian Epstein really. So many entities collided to let the Beatles realise their full potential… was this accidental…are there such things? Brian was probably pivotal, for without his vision, stubbornness and endeavour we would never have witnessed their magnitude. From the moment he saw them one lunchtime in Matthew Street he could visualise their destiny. The trick would be controlling John, then getting him into a suit.

The birds and butterflies are a tip of the hat to the Beatles’ awareness that we are all one, and that every creature casts a shadow. Who are we to dominate?

Strong, almost indestructable Bread & Butter paper allowed me to march Roman armies and Hitler’s tanks over this, giving a faded patina to wisened and wisdomed Keef. I drew inspiration (again and again) from those fantastic Renaissance guys with use of brilliant reds and blues. Oil paint was invented in the early 15th century or thereabouts and suddenly paintings became highly charged with new colours.

Every so often someone would come up with a new one, based on minerals and plants, and the chemist would demonstrate how it was made to the artist. God, we have it easy struggling into the ArtStore.

Description

I started painting this the day after I saw the great Canadian blow Aberdeen away in the summer of 2009. My son and I had the pleasure of meeting him briefly after the concert. I’d heard all the stories about his gruffness, but we struck up a good accord in our moments together… he has incredible humanity behind those fearsome eyes. During the show he had verbally dismantled a hapless soul who had insisted on being the centre of attention during one of the tender songs.

The painting has only been in public once before, at a village art fair in deepest Scotland. Neil was hanging underneath a very alluring portrait of a highland cow, and I have to report their was a certain sympathy. It’s done in watercolour, pencils, chalks and acrylics.

From the artist:

“The piece is a celebration of the fantastic achievements of all those connected with the Homeless World Cup. It has three figures; the first one depicts the dejection of the homeless man, but the second and third figures show him literally pulling himself up and then leaping and punching the air, football style.

I’m a great fan of the game having raised two sons who are both mad keen players and supporters. But I’ve also witnessed the magic potential football has (and I’d personally argue that it has it more than any other sport) to build self esteem in young men through the utter joy of the game.

I know there are down sides to the game, but this is a celebration of the up side, and all the good it does right from grassroots to the Premiership!

The piece itself is made from ceramic and glass and measures 60 cm high x 40cm x 60cm. One of the glass pieces is shattered and the figure leaping in celebration comes through the glass. People will interpret the smashed glass in their own way I’ sure, but for me it gives a sense of action, immediacy and release of energy.I also wanted it to give a slightly edgy feel to the piece (no pun intended!) Broken glass is often around when bad things have happened, but there is also the sense that this man is breaking away from the bad things in his life.”

The cup allows people to realise and achieve their dreams of representing their countries, as well as being a platform for them to re-build relationships with family and friends and to also help them into education and employment.

The HWC has been running since 2003, where it held the first cup in Graz, Austria. This year’s event is already underway and is being held in Paris.
