Hamish Blakely : Quiet Time
Quiet Time
In its essence, this goes hand in hand with ‘Sitting Pretty.’ The treatment, however, conveys a very different atmosphere. The almost impressionistic handling of the background articulates something more stormy. The man’s ruminant attitude acts as a centre of peace amid the lively brushwork of his surroundings. This helps introduce the feeling that the man, as the woman in ‘Sitting Pretty’, is taking time out from the profound, physical exertion of the Tango. He seems to be a man who is taking stock - preparing for his next move and the removal of his shirt indicates that he has been through a lot, but is getting ready for more.
I used an old piano stool rather than a chair as it amplifies the solidity of his frame and doesn’t detract from the importance of the anatomy as well as the texture of his jeans and the crumpled folds of his t-shirt. Again, here I am playing around with different surfaces - the felt of his hat, the flesh of his arms under the intense light source and the weight of his hands. As with any successful piece, the viewer’s reaction should be greater than the sum of its parts. I hope that while enjoying the technical aspect of this piece, the viewer is invited to wonder at what this man is about. What is he thinking, what has he seen and what would be like to dance with?
