Breeze

We had the great pleasure of speaking to a chap called Michel Le Prince in our gallery at Jenners this morning.

Michel is a long-standing friend of Bob Dylan and wanted to view his much talked about collection.

A retired doctor, who originates from Nice in France, Michel recalled with great fondness the late sixties when he met Dylan for the first time at the Nice Jazz Festival - which his father was a founding organizer. He also recalls sketching, with Dylan, portraits of one another.

Now retired and living in Portobello is a keen artist and is well known in the community in Edinburgh.

Michel’s son is buying a copy of the drawn blank book for his father as a gift. Fond memories will be rekindled every time Michel picks up his copy of the drawn blank book!

The bank holiday on Monday for the west of Scotland saw many visitors to our galleries from Glasgow and surrounding areas.  And just to show how true the old adage “it’s a small world” really is our Peebles gallery manager, Elizabeth, was surprised and delighted to bump into a school teacher she hadn’t seen in many years.

Although Elizabeth had a hard time now calling a former teacher by her first name, Sharon and her husband said they thoroughly enjoyed the fantastic range of art and furniture that they found in the Peebles gallery - although they did admit that Alexander Millar was their favourite.

Fans of great art in the west of Scotland will soon find that that they don’t have to travel quite so far the outstanding offerings from Breeze.  Watch this space…..

Dreams Are Made Of This by Paul Corfield

I wanted to refine my painting technique and to achieve this I felt I would need a smoother surface to work on, than I had previously been using; so I began creating my own wood panels. I began with a bare wood panel, onto which I applied between 6 to 8 layers of gesso primer, and then sanded it down between each coat. When I began ‘Dreams Are Made Of This’ I quickly learnt that due to the smoothness of the wood, applied paint simply slid off the wooden surface. Consequently I applied more layers of paint and learnt a lot that I have carried over to new works. Another major change you will notice with this painting is the direction of the light source as the sun is now shining from the front which gives the style a whole new look.

Nearly every square inch of this painting has so many small touches that just weren’t there on earlier works. As with all my paintings, I have no colour sketch to work to, it just all happens once, this painting simply became a real feast of colour theory. I start the painting and that gives me the freedom to experiment and it’s helped me to keep improving with each new work.

Lavender Fields by Paul Corfield.

I love Lavender as a plant and a couple of local Lavender farms gave me the initial inspiration for this painting where the Lavender is planted in long rows and looks and smells gorgeous when in flower. This was my first long panoramic landscape painting and the wide views of the long rows of Lavender were perfect for this style of canvas. I painted the Lavender in a very stylized way to match the overall style of my work and I really like the final outcome although before I started the painting I was worried that it may not work. I can usually visualize very clearly how a finished painting will look before I’ve even started it. For that reason I never even do a rough colour sketch for any of my paintings, they just start with a very simple pencil sketch. I don’t think about the colours until I literally pick up my paintbrushes.

Peter Smith rounded out his UK tour this weekend with visits to breeze in Peebles on Friday and then to our gallery in Jenners, Edinburgh on Saturday.

Both galleries were very busy for his arrival and the guests were treated to some fantastic, personal stories from Peter on the journey that each painting makes from the blank canvas to the finished piece.

As you can see from our photos of the event, Peter was kind enough to personally autograph and doodle on the back of some of the paintings sold.

On his own blog, Peter said “It was pretty packed as I arrived, this photo was the first five minutes and it never really stopped for the next few hours, we eventually got back to the hotel a little before 10:00pm, tired but extremely happy with the appearance.”

Everyone here at breeze would like to thank Peter and all our guests for making this a wonderful, fun-filled event.
