McCowan attended the University of Miami and University of California. Xerox Corporation sponsored him at the University of California for Graduate Studies, where he was employed until 1980.
McCowan is a serious full time painter and paints every day. His interests include psychology, poetry, art history and philosophy. He is also a keen observer of human behaviour. He lives in Florida with his Wife Sandra and a menagerie of dogs.
